To be eligible for a small business credit card, you must own a small business, have a side hustle, or work as a freelancer. The quality of your trip delay coverage is determined by the business travel credit card that you use. The Chase Ink Business Preferred offers a cheaper annual charge of $95 but only covers trip delays of 12 hours or more (or an overnight stay). The American Express Business Platinum card offers more comprehensive coverage for delays of 6 hours or longer, but it comes with a higher annual charge of $695 (see rates and fees).

How Trip Delay Compensation Works

Credit card trip delay insurance reimburses you for eligible expenditures incurred when a covered delay occurs on a trip paid for using a card that provides this benefit (all or part of the trip, depending on the coverage). This includes reward travel when paid for with the points linked with that particular card. To qualify, your booking must be run by a “common carrier,” which includes commercial aircraft, railroads, cruise ships, and buses. Local buses and railways, as well as rented automobiles, are the only major exceptions.

Typically, you’ll get paid up to a set amount per ticket, and coverage extends to the cardholder, spouse or domestic partner, and qualified dependents. You can be compensated for reasonable expenditures like housing, food, prescriptions, and toiletries that are not covered by the travel provider or other insurance. This form of coverage, however, does not cover prepaid costs.

Only covered delays are covered under trip delay coverage. Delays can be caused by anything from bad weather to mechanical problems to system failures. To be compensated for additional expenditures, the delay must often need an overnight stay or be at least 6 hours or 12 hours lengthy (depending on the card). Furthermore, any delay caused by a covered danger that was made known or was public before departure is not covered.

How to Make a Travel Delay Claim
